Algebra I

This course begins the transition from concrete numbers to unknown quantities represented by symbols. Students will learn to formulate and solve symbolic equations from verbal information. We will study the fundamental equations of lines and parabolas and explore connections of algebra and geometry.

Topics include: formulating symbolic equations from verbal information, equations of lines, slope as rate of change, systems of lines, elimination method, substitution method, equations of parabolas, completing the square, discriminant, maximum and minimum values of a parabola, formula for the roots of a quadratic equation, connections between algebra and geometry.
